Health and social benefits

Health insuranceHide

Family insurance

Up to their 25th birthday, students can generally be insured with their parents free of charge, provided that their monthly income does not exceed the limit of €450. There is no age limit if the student is unable to support themselves.

Student health insurance

As soon as students lose their entitlement to family insurance, the low-cost statutory health insurance tariff for students is available to them until the end of their 14th semester or their 30th year. Disabled or chronically ill students can extend the tariff for a reason. However, the student insurance requirement ends at the latest when they turn 37.

Voluntary insurance

If students cannot provide a reason for extending their student health insurance after their 14th semester or their 30th year, voluntary insurance is necessary.

Private health and nursing care insurance

Within the first three months of their studies, students can be exempted from compulsory statutory health insurance in favor of private health insurance. However, it is not possible to switch back to statutory health insurance during your studies.

Health insurance during a study-related stay abroad

Before studying or doing an internship abroad, check with your insurance company which services are covered by your insurance in which countries. You may need additional insurance.

Care and assistanceHide

Disabled and chronically ill students often have to organize their care and personal assistance in everyday life in addition to their studies:

Nursing insurance

If the student needs significant help in everyday life and for at least six months, they may be able to claim benefits from nursing insurance.

Personal budget

The personal budget is an opportunity to decide for yourself which help is most suitable for your individual needs. Instead of receiving goods or services for participation directly from the rehabilitation provider, the budget is paid out here in order to independently purchase services from various providers.

State nursing and blindness benefits

State nursing benefits are intended to compensate for the additional needs caused by the disability - visually impaired and blind people can receive state blindness benefits.

Entitlement to child benefitHide

Entitlement to child benefit

During a course of study, you are entitled to child benefit until you turn 25. This can also apply if the disability occurred before you turned 25 and you are unable to support yourself. It also applies during a six-month leave of absence from your studies if this was due to illness. The contact person is the relevant family benefits office.

Housing benefit entitlementHide

Housing benefit entitlement

Housing benefit helps people with low incomes with housing costs - however, an application for housing benefit is only worthwhile if needy students are not entitled to BAföG and can also present the rejection notice as proof to the housing office.

Severely disabled person's ID cardHide

Severely disabled person's ID card

The severely disabled person's ID card plays no role at the university and is not mandatory - except for using the disabled parking spaces. The fees for using public transport included in the semester ticket can be refunded to holders of a severely disabled person's ID card with the symbols G, aG, H, Gl and Bl. To get the semester ticket refunded, students should contact the Student Office; if they have any questions about the severely disabled person's ID card, they should contact the Center for Family and Social Affairs in Bavaria.

The ID card is also important for applying for a barrier-free room in a student residence run by the Upper Franconia Student Union. It should be enclosed with the application.

Additional needs during studiesHide

Additional needs related to training

Additional needs related to training relate to the teaching, learning and examination situations of the student during their studies. This includes all technical aids, study and communication assistance, mobility aids as well as additional material and support services. They can be covered as part of the integration assistance for disabled people according to SGB XII.

Additional needs not related to training

Additional needs not related to training can be covered under certain conditions according to SGB II.

Disability pensionHide

Disability pension

Students do not have to report their enrollment or their degree to the pension insurance provider while they are receiving their pension. However, it is to be expected that, due to the lack of earning capacity, integration assistance benefits for attending a university will not be available. In order not to jeopardize your entitlement, you should therefore inquire before starting your studies.

For prospective students who are dependent on basic social security in addition to their disability pension due to full incapacity to work, starting a course of study is generally not possible.
